Video Game: Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is a 2D action adventure video game released in 2017 by Team Cherry, an indie games developer based in Adelaide, Australia. Hollow Knight is their first game and was partially funded by a Kickstarter campaign launched in 2014.

The adventure take place in a fictional world called Hallownest, where you will play an insect knight. You will explore a dark and devastated underworld, abandoned by its inhabitants to find out what happened to them. Many dangers will stand in your way, and you will have to persevere to found out the mysteries hidden in the different levels. While you progress through the maze of the different stages you will fight bosses, encounter hostile bugs, but also disillusioned characters.

Throughout your journey you will acquire additional abilities and learn new spells that will allow you to access additional part of the underworld. The level of difficulty of Hollow Knight is rather high, but your perseverance will eventually pay. You’ll have to fight over and over again to learn the fighting patterns. You will also need precision and responsiveness to succeed in your quest. In exchange you will have the pleasure to evolve and an amazingly dark and poetic world.

The world created by Team Cherry is gorgeous. Each level has its own theme. Despite the overall dark shades, touches of light are added to highlight specific areas. This creates contrasts, which bring depth to the levels. Walking through the levels of the game you will also discover the amazing bestiary created for this game. Indeed the world is filled with little bugs, some are even cute such as the little grubs or Myla the humming miner.

The music was composed by Christopher Larkin. It perfectly supports the story and reinforces the heavy atmosphere. The music always fits to what you are doing: a more dynamic and marked background sound when facing enemies, slower and calmer rhythms when discussing with inhabitants or catchy as you progress through the levels.

The sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is currently in development. It will this time focus on Hornet, a character encountered in the first Hollow Knight game.
